What a Chew Can Do For You
Our favorite little snack just hit headlines
with a smack. New research keeps revealing more
of the unexpected benefits of chewing gum!
Already known to freshen breath and provide a
low-calorie treat between meals, now studies in
the US and the UK have uncovered gum’s uncanny
ability to
help boost students' test scores, counter
fatigue, and lower stress levels. Gum also
aids digestion, and even helps you to chop
onions without tearing up. Yup!
Some say you are what you eat. We say you are
what you chew! How about you?
Unjunk Your Junk Food
Plus, a Giveaway
Love junk food, hate junk in your trunk? We
know the feeling, and that’s why we we're
thrilled to be included in the brand new book
Unjunk Your Junk Food. This handy, dandy guide
shows you healthier alternatives to nearly every
snack you crave. Bubblegum Glee took the coveted
spot as a yummy, all-natural option for chewing
gum! Co-author Andrea Donsky of
NaturallySavvy.com was kind enough to answer
a few questions for us.
Glee: What inspired you to write the
book?
Andrea: We wanted to help people make
better shopping choices for products they eat on
a regular basis.
Glee: What was the process of writing it
like?
Andrea: It was a lot of work but we learned
a lot. It took us two years to write the book
and we are very excited it is finally on the
shelf!
Glee: What were some of the challenges?
Andrea: The ingredients and nutrition facts
are constantly changing, so being on top of the
latest information was key.
Glee: Did you learn anything surprising?
Andrea: A lot! We thought we knew it all when it
came to ingredients and chemical-free products,
but boy did we learn a lot more than we ever
expected, which is great since we could pass
along that information to the masses.
Glee: What can readers expect?
Andrea: A fun, reader-friendly book in
everyday language. There is trivia and detailed
information on which ingredients to avoid when
buying junk food and any food in general.
Glee: What makes this book so timely?
Andrea: The reality is, 96% of us eat junk
food. But, do we really know what is in these
foods? It is easy to say, “It is junk food, so
who cares?” But, the truth is, if we take the
time to eat junk food that is free of
preservatives, artificial colors and trans fats,
we may crave it less and feel more satisfied
with eating a smaller amount of it.

Dieting With Aspartame? For Shame!
New Year’s resolution time! If you’re
planning to cut calories in 2012, consider
cutting artificial sweeteners, too. Fake sugars
sneak their way into a lot of “diet” foods, and
they can cause a mess of unpleasant side effects
while they’re at it.
A chief culprit is aspartame-- an artificial
sweetener composed of phenylalanine, aspartic
acid and methanol. Aspartame requires extra
energy from the liver to metabolize. This in
turn can burden the liver and lead to weight
gain. Not so great for a diet!
Aspartame is found in most sugarless gums,
but not Glee. We use 100% xylitol to sweeten our
sugar-free gum because it’s all natural and
promotes dental health — fighting cavities,
reducing plaque, and more. So, if you’ve gotta
cut sugar, at least you can keep your sweet
teeth happy.
